BSA '56 agricultural education
Wherever he has served and in whatever he has accomplished, Bill Gunter has always strived to enhance the agricultural industry, the University of Florida, IFAS, and, specifically, the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
Bill's connection to agriculture began early. He was raised on a dairy farm near Live Oak and was active in FFA, serving as chapter president, state vice president, and the organization's national president in 1954-55.
An agricultural education major, Bill served as the managing editor of the Florida Alligator student newspaper and was inducted into Florida Blue Key and the University of Florida Hall of Fame. Following college, he spent two years in the U.S. Army before returning to Florida. After a year spent teaching, Bill joined the insurance business.
In 1966, Bill was elected to the State Senate where he served until his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1972. In 1975, he left Washington to return to Florida where he was elected State Insurance Commissioner, Treasurer and Fire Marshal, a Cabinet position he held for 12 years.
Bill's numerous honors include UF's Stephen C. O'Connell Distinguished Service Award and the Florida FFA Hall of Fame. He has been a strong supporter of UF, IFAS and the college both through talking to prospective students about opportunities in agriculture and financially. Bill resides in Tallahassee with his wife Kathy. He was nominated by The Hon. J. Wayne Mixson.

bsa '06 food and resource economics, MS '08 animal sciences
As many freshmen do, Ashley Hughes began her journey at the University of Florida as a pre-veterinary medicine student. She found a part-time job at the UF Dairy Nutrition Lab which cultivated her love of cattle nutrition and science and her career path quickly changed directions.
An undergraduate degree in Food and Resource Economics provided a business background which is complimented by her master's program in Animal Sciences. She was an active member of Gator Collegiate CattleWomen, Dairy Science Club, Agricultural and Life Sciences College Council, and Animal Sciences Graduate Student Association.
Ashley began her professional career with the Georgia Cattlemen's Association and Georgia Beef Board, but returned to Florida when offered the opportunity to work for the Florida Beef Council and Florida Cattlemen's Association.
Outside of her time with the Florida Beef Council, Ashley volunteers with the UF Animal Sciences Department and raises awareness for Parents Project for Muscular Dystrophy, specifically as a part of the Sam Strong Team, with Run for Our Sons. Last January, she represented Sam Strong while completing the Dopey Challenge during the Disney World Marathon Weekend, running four races in four days for a total of 48.6 miles.
Ashley is a rising star in the Florida agriculture industry. She was nominated by Woody Larson and Don Quincey.
