UF Teaching Center Resources

The UF Teaching Center has expanded tutoring and learning services for fall semester even though the expansion of facilities is moving more slowly than originally hoped. The opening of the expanded facilities is now scheduled for December. A listing of new and expanded services follows for you to share with your students:

  • The Teaching Center is now offering individual weekly appointments for tutoring. Because we have no idea about demand, appointments will be granted on a first come first serve basis; however, priority will be given to students on academic probation who apply during the first 3 weeks of the term. To take advantage of this service, the student should complete the application form found at the UF Teaching Center under "Tutoring Services." Appointments are limited to two 50-minute appointments per student per week: 2 appointments for 1 course or 1 appointment for 2 courses.
  • Also, we have committed more time to study skills/learning strategy workshops and advisement. Dr. Martin Simpson is now available to conduct workshops, make guest appearances in classes, or work with students individually on topics such as "getting the most from your lectures" and "improving your performance on tests." Faculty, advisors, and students should contact Dr. Simpson to schedule a meeting.
  • Planning for Supplemental Instruction (SI) is underway. Supplemental Instruction, voluntary group study sessions for difficult courses (as opposed to tutoring for struggling students), is scheduled to begin spring semester. We will send upper-class/graduate students (called supplemental instructors) to class to observe, and then the supplemental instructors will facilitate group study sessions where learning strategies will be emphasized. This project will start small and will involve faculty who are interested in providing this service to their students. Dr. Willa Wolcott will be contacting academic advisors and others for input as the planning for this activity progresses.
  • Live tutoring via Channel 22 ATTV in the residence halls and off-campus via video streaming will return Sunday, August 29. Students will be able to phone their questions in to the "TutorTime" tutors between 8 pm and midnight Sunday through Thursday. Other useful programming for students (e.g. study tips, CLAST reviews, "how to's" for computer topics, etc.) as well as the recorded tutoring sessions will be replayed at scheduled times throughout the day.
  • The regular "walk-in" tutoring in math, science, business, and engineering continues at the Teaching Center. The schedule of subjects and tutor hours can be found on the Teaching Center web site.
  • The Reading and Writing Center continues to offer individual assistance to students who want to improve their reading and writing skills or to prepare for the standardized tests. The Center's hours of operation can be found on the Reading and Writing Center web site.
