Barrick Named Dean of CALS
An associate dean from the University of Illinois has been named dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. His appointment becomes effective Aug. 25, 2005.
R. Kirby Barrick, associate dean for academic programs in the College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, was selected to lead the UF/IFAS college by Jimmy Cheek, UF senior vice president for agriculture and natural resources.
Cheek said Barrick will provide visionary leadership to the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and will significantly advance its strategic goals in the coming years.

Gators Leave Their Hearts in San Francisco
The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and the University of Florida Alumni Association partnered to offer an alumni trip to San Francisco and Northern California August 6-13. Participants were greeted in San Francisco by Steve "Gator" Wood, president of the San Francisco Bay Gator Club.The eight-day trip featured visits to many of California's cultural sites, natural wonders and agricultural treasures including: Hearst Castle, Muir Woods, Sacramento, Big Sur, the San Joaquin and Salinas Valleys, Yosemite, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Napa Valley wineries, and the neighborhoods of San Francisco.
Participants learned about the many agricultural commodities of Northern California and visited tomato, lettuce and garlic harvesting operations, the North American artichoke capital, a feedlot and diary farm, and pistachio and almond groves.

CALS Family Fishing Weekend
The Second Annual CALS Alumni and Friends (CALSAF) Family Fishing Weekend, benefiting the CALSAF Scholarship Fund, was held July 29-30 in Boca Grande, FL. Participants enjoyed a sun-filled weekend of fishing, bike riding and socializing with fellow Gators. The winning team of the total catch length, multi-species tournament caught more than 90 fish, mainly trout, that totaled 1,110 inches.
CALSAF would like to extend many thanks to the sponsors of the event, which included A. Duda and Sons, Arrow Environmental Services, and Orsenigo Farms.

Wildlife Alumnus Wins Prestigious Award
When the HRH The Princess Royal announced the winners of the UK’s top conservation prize, The Whitley Award, in London, Argentine conservation biologist, Andrés Novaro (PhD, ’97) was among the eight winners. Novaro, 42, received The Whitley Award sponsored by The Sigrid Rausing Trust for his ongoing campaign to stop the decline of vulnerable native wildlife in Patagonia, close to the southern tip of South America.The campaign is part of the Patagonian and Southern Andean Steppe Program of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and was developed jointly by Novaro (Director) and Susan Walker (PhD, ’01) (Assistant Director). Another WEC alum, Martin Funes (MS, ’96), is the program coordinator for the northern Patagonia sites. Two other WEC alumni received The Whitley Award: Rodrigo Medellin (PhD, ’92) in 2004; and Claudio Padua (PhD, ’93) in 1999. more
